Types of Thinking - Science Behind Day to Day Thinking

Science of Thinking - System 1 & 2 Thinking Processes
With all your amazement, I would like to tell you that any person thinks in two different ways. This is a fact of science behind thinking. You, me, any intelligent or a dumb person have a running thinking process. For any situation, question or scenario we run a thinking process consciously or unconsciously in our mind. Today, I'm going to reveal this phenomenon in brief.

There are two types of thinking. System 1 and System 2. So what is it? Lets Explore.

What is System 1 Thinking Process?
Let's start with an example. Fill in the blanks with the first word pops into your mind. Trust me it's really easy. So ready? Alright then,
1. Bread and ______
2. 2 + 2 = _____
3. Your Name is _____

A majority of people there might come upon a quick answer popped into their mind like, bread & Butter; 2 + 2 = 4 and your name. Isn't it? So this is called System 1 thinking. The easy, fast & effortless answers which pop up into your mind unconsciously is part of system 1 thinking. In a majority of the scenario, we use system 1 thinking. The features of system 1 thinking is Automotive, Primary, Rapid, Blind, Intuitive, Instinctive & WYSIATI (What You See Is All There Is). Sometimes or I would say most of the times this kind of thinking phenomenon misleads us and we might take wrong decisions.

What is System 2 Thinking Process?
If you guessed it's a complex thinking process which acquire a good amount of efforts, energy and pondering. Then you are absolutely right [see you have just used your system 1 thinking]. System 2 thinking is a bit slow. It needs your complete concentration, reasoning & logical power. You have to think deliberately about the situation, question, etc. Let me give an example:
1. The dress you wore two weeks ago on Tuesday was of ______ color
2. 768*9538 = ____

The answers don't pop us that easily. Right? The system 2 thinking process features are Effortful, Secondary, Focused, Considered, Slower & Lazy. Hope the phenomenon is clear to you. If you found it interesting then continue reading :)

History of this Thinking System Phenomenon
If you are curious just like me then read further to know some interesting facts & details of this thinking system phenomenon.  Daniel Kahneman performed the research with Amos Tversky for this subject. He received the Noble prize as well for the same. You may read more about him from the wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Kahneman

How to be Intelligent?
The Humans are tend to use system 1 thinking all the time, so when we should use system 2 thinking. We use only system 1 until something force us to use system 2 thinking. We take the wrong decisions, give wrong answers because of this habit. That is the human mind limitations, but is it end? Neah. We can practice, practice and do some more practice to develop our system 2 thinking. Once we develop it, system 2 thinking will perform as system 1. It will be fast, efficient and correct which will lead us to correct and precise decision making.

Let's take an example:
Don't Google it :)
In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how many days would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

At 1st glance, you might come up with an answer 24. You might have used your system 1 thinking. The correct answer is 47. Read the question again & think again.

Hope you found the post interesting and informative. If you have any query, feel free to leave a message in the comment section. To get regular updates of such interesting posts subscribe to my blog. And do you want to develop your system 2 thinking? Wait for my next post with some interesting questions which will test your system 2 thinking and help you to develop it.

Judgmental Thinking - The Unavoidable Nuance of Human Nature Part 2

Hope you have enjoyed the part 1 of judgmental thinking. If you haven't read it, you may explore it here http://talksfest.blogspot.in/2014/03/judgmental-thinking-unavoidable-nuance_20.html

So this is time to speak something more in depth about judgmental thinking, its consequences and how to overshadow the judgmental thinking.

Can a Judgmental Nature be Harmful?
The most important question it is! If you are keeping your judgment just to yourself, it is not harmful at all. But the another trait of human nature is Humans are expressive. The most introvert person will share his thoughts & views (which might be judgments) to the person(s) close to him. Gradually, it will be spread to others because we all are connected to many people emotionally and we express our thoughts with them. This is known as a Mouth Publicity, technically. It may be harmful because it will create a false image of that person. It might create hurdles for him & you. There can be many consequences which might get converted in predicaments.

How To Avoid Being Judgmental?
It is impossible for a human to avoid judgmental thinking, but you can avoid it. How? The solution is, don't make the strong statement. Just put it as your point of view. If possible mention "I might be wrong". Keep the doors open for other possibilities. For example, When we see someone putting himself upfront, very strongly, all the time, everywhere. Don't pass the statement like he must be egoistic. You can express the same thought like "I think he must have an ego problem". More better statement could be "I may be wrong but I think he might have an ego problem". See you said what you wanted to without being judgmental ;)

Last, but not the least, most important thing to I would like to share everyone is Someone is like that may be because of certain reason which we don't know. We even shouldn't delve to know. He might have passed from something which made him like this. Everyone have right to live the life & personality of his choice. We shouldn't pass our imaginary conclusion - judgment about him without knowing what he has passed through. Right?

Judgmental Thinking - The Unavoidable Nuance of Human Nature Part 1

Judgmental Thinking - Unavoidable Feature of Human Brain
Judgmental Thinking. Nobody can refrain this core trait of a human nature. We all behave in a judgmental way at a certain point, Consciously, Unconsciously, Intentionally, Unintentionally . We all know what is being judgmental, but still let me give a brief.

What is Judgmental Thinking?
When we don't know the whole picture of something we start making assumptions about it. At a certain point, we reach to a conclusion from the assumptions we made. That conclusion is known as Judgment. The whole process of assuming & reaching to imaginary conclusion is known as Judgmental thinking. I must admit human nature, the brain & scientific facts behind it are really fascinating. Isn't it?

Let's take an example. If we are passing by a road & see on a sidewalk somebody is beating someone badly. In the majority, we think like, "Aw how cruel the person is? Why the hell is he beating this innocent guy? How brutal he is!" There can be another side of the coin. The person who is baring the drubbing might be guilty. Or do you think anyone just gets whacked by someone without any reason? We behave judgmentally in such scenario.

Why Do We Behave Judgmentally?
That's an interesting question. isn't it? Simple answer is we don't have much time to dig up the matter in deep to know the facts & to come upon a right conclusion. So in such situation, our mind use the experience & information we have, create an imaginary picture of the next person and/or situation, give us a conclusion - judgment.

Do We Need To Be Judgmental?
Well, scientifically our brain does this to save us from some extra research to excavate the facts. So it is helping us to use our energy & power of brain at right place. So it is something called energy management by the Brain. How smart it is! :)

There are some more facts about this interesting and the most common trait of human nature like can such nature harm us? what we avoid it? I will share it in the upcoming part of the blog. Stay tuned and give your views in the comment section. I would love to hear it.

How to Get The Information Out?

One of the million dollar question how to get the information out of someone? How to read somebody's mind? This question arises in anyone's life. We might want to get the information of some vital assignment or if you are in love, you might want to know does that person really like you or not? etc. We all are trying to find the key of it. So I have brought the key of it for you.

First the disclaimer, This is not a foolproof method, but it will work in 90 to 99% scenarios. There is one very effective saying of very effective personality, "Ash Vyas" that "There is a right key to everyone's heart, we just need to find it". :) So this one is the master key for the majority of scenarios with the majority of people.

So what is the key? The key is "To Oppose". Yes, the key is, get the next person in defense mode by constantly opposing him. When the person comes into the defense position, he will give all the information & evidences needed to prove you were wrong and himself right.

This formula work in all situations like if you want to take a survey about something, just raise the topic in the crowd whom you want to survey. Then speak either positive or negative aspects of that topic with strong & confident tone. Gradually people will start divided in two groups, one in favor and one in against. ;) Even the most reserved person will give his point in 1-2 word or line. If you are in love with somebody and want to know what she feels about you, let me give you the trick. Just speak against yourself. Say you are the worst person on this planet. If she doesn't have any feelings & she is modest, she will say just 1-2 lines like "There is nothing like that. Don't think so". But if she has some feelings, she will defend you from you. She will give you thousands of concrete evidences to prove you that you are so good. To have fun, keep on opposing, get some more thought collection of the next person ;) :)

It might sounds unpractical to you then you can try it on your own. It's gonna be fun. :) You might wonder how do I know this? Well like many more subjects, I like to study human nature because its really variable & fascinating. I like to assess people & their mindsets including myself to have some more instincts of human nature. :) This is a result of that constant observation.

One interesting fact is the person can't resist himself by doing this even if he knows this fact. That's the human nature. :) So even if you have read this post, I or people like me can still apply this key on you ;) But still different people, different nature, so there can be people who don't reveal their thoughts to you by this key ;) So now you have the key to get the hidden info out so have fun!

Don't Search, Be The Right One!

Be the Right Person
As per my routine, I usually read during travelling from office to home & vice verse. Today a girl sat beside me & started a conversation by asking about what book I am reading. She inspired me to write this post. Let me brief you the conversation 1st so you can decide whether it is something of your interest or not. She had completed BA in English literature & pursuing Law part time. Full time doing a job in a call center. She is studying law just to get married to the right guy. The right guy means a rich guy with a bungalow, car, etc. She desires to have lavish life. There may be many boys as well who usually wish to marry a rich or an NRI girl or waiting for some miracle to happen in their life which make them rich.

Nothing wrong to desire to have a lavish life. The thing is why to get dependent on someone? Why to search some well settled & rich life partner to have luxurious life? Why not to work hard & smart. Why not to make your career or earning money focal point in your life? There are so many such whys? :(

She sounds quite innocent as she shared her personal matters with me. She even gave me her number, asked for mine as well, but I rescued myself with healthy excuse. ;) If you also share such personal information to a stranger, I strongly advice don't you risk yourself by sharing such vital information to any stranger. You shouldn't trust anyone because each stranger is not as good as Ash Vyas ;) People might misuse it.

I would also highlight her few comments. She said, "If you won't study well, you can't get a rich guy.", "I am studying just to get married with a well-settled guy.", "In Ahmedabad, there is no value of education. you can't get job with good salary. At max you can earn only 15 K/Month. So I want to be a lawyer then as you know lawyers earn a lot." ;) Don't think I didn't said anything at all. I stopped myself a lot, but couldn't resist a radical woman inside. I said you might earn your own by being a good lawyer, but couldn't change her thinking as accepted. I even asked her will you fight for truth after being a lawyer? She said I will try, but for money has to do something. :( I was like "Aw my India :(" Today itself, I just had a conversation with my colleague that if we are intelligent & capable why not to serve our India? Why not be part of its growth? And the answer she gave me made me feel :'( She extended her destination by 2 more stops even if it costs more to her, just to extend the conversation with me. It means I am a good listener even if I am not interested in having any conversation :P :D

The funny part was when she asked me what my husband is doing? To make her jealous [just for fun] I said, "He is a businessman." She asked, "Means a manager or an owner?" I,  "An Owner" :D She "Wow yar. You are so lucky. We are still searching for the one" :P :D

She really left me in stat to ponder. I mean why don't people desire what is in their own hand? I mean it is difficult to expect something from someone whilst easier to do something on your own as you have control on yourself. Don't try to look out for the right person. Just be the right one. What do you think?

What 21st Century Women Really Want?

21st Century Woman
Today, I came across the blog post which had highlighted what a woman really want? Very interesting topic, but very fake result according to me of course. May be I am wrong. May be not. So I though let's draft a post and ask everyone, what do you think?

According to that survey, What women really want? The result is as below:

  • Shopping 48%
  • Relationship/Marriage (30%)
  • Health & Fitness (14%)
  • Childcare / Parenting (5%)

That's it. Each time I read or share this result, one reaction comes to my mind. Are you kidding me? I mean is this a result of 21st century women's desire or 12th century women desire? Where is education? Where is career? I mean come on, didn't you find at least 1% of women who desired for better education & bright career. Weird! Absurd! Unbelievable! Impossible! Sounds Fake!

There might be a few women who desire only above listed things, but in the 21st century women has been more career centric. She is much more serious about her education and studies for sure. I have worked with many ambitious girls in the corporate world. Even I have worked as a teacher. From school girl to college teenage females, all were desired to have proper education & career. I have seen girls who literally cry when they don't get a job and receive a marriage proposal. She wants to work. She wants her identity as her priority and you are asking me to believe you didn't find even 1% of girl who desired to have good studies & career.

If I talk about myself, I don't enjoy shopping much unless it is something about accompanying my parents to have some quality time with them. I work for 9-10 hrs approximately. When I am travelling I read books. When I have some free time, I usually blog, read, write educational assignments or attend my distance learning classes. If we consider any other girl she might spend 10-60% time for studies or job at least. Doesn't she?

This is 21st century. Women want to fly in the sky of the opportunities. Even in the antiquity when there were almost no opportunity for a girl there were so many women who made their name. In today's world, girls are taking risk of life to study, remember Yousafzai Malala? Girls are making their name in each and every industry. The priority has been changed from settling down with marriage & having kids, She wants to create her identity first. She loves to be independent. 21st century women independent, focused, ambitious and successful. That's I am. What about you?

And ya don't forget to leave your answer. What do you think? What 21st century women really wants?

Women's Day - The Two Oaths Man Must Take

On this women's day - For a Man who supports the Woman
First of all, Happy Women’s Day. There must be numerous write-ups about women’s rights & liberation. I would like to talk about something which people usually overlook. About those MEN who understand the worth of women. Let’s talk with those positive men on this women’s day J

I know that you know the worth of the women, but do you say so? You admire her, but do you express it in words? Did you wish “Women’s Day’ to women in your life before you left for the office where you wished many other women the same? Um, I think in 90% cases the answer is “No”. I know this is a nuance of a man.  I know you are not as expressive as a woman. You want her to understand the unspoken words of love & care and she does. She does understand you love her, care for her. But don’t you think expression of love & care is an essence of the happy life? Don’t interpret it like she is thirsty for the praise or flattering. Neah, she doesn’t. But don’t you think she deserves to know how much you love &care for her. When the food is a bit more salty or spicy, you won’t forget to comment on it. Then why not to praise her for delicious food she serves daily. Even the best thing could be eat that mistakenly cooked salty food silently by keeping her efforts in mind J

One more thing is I have seen sometimes that a man don’t raise his voice to protect a woman. There are many ugly crimes are happening around us against the woman like domestic violence, rape, eve-teasing & so on. A man has the strength to oppress or protect a woman. If a man is oppressing a woman, you must raise your voice to protect her. I know you care for her, you feel bad then why not to attempt to rescue her? If you are scared to get into some trouble, at least inform the cops if something like that is happening or you think can happen, at least anonymously.

On this woman’s day I want to urge all of you to protect her. Raise voice for her. For me every day is my day. Every day is a women’s day, but today, indirectly, it is a man’s day. Take a silent oath that you will help a lady in need as much as you can. You will use your words to admire her instead of criticize her. Today is the day to express her that she is important. J Just tell her “You made my life” or “You are the one who made my life so beautiful” and feel that glow on her face J

Hey man, I know you care then why don’t you share?
